Who we are

Overheard in Québec is a website and video channel run by Tandem Bureau, C.P. 79164, succ. Freeman, Gatineau, Québec J8Y 6V2, Canada.

What we collect and why

We collect personal information only if you sign up for one of our two email lists:

• Quiz list: an email when a new weekly quiz is up.
• Lessons list: one email when lessons open, describing what they include and what they cost.

When you sign up, we keep your email address, the list you chose, the language you signed up in, the page you signed up on, the date and time, and the exact consent wording you saw.

We use this information only to send the emails you asked for and to prove you asked for them. We don't ask for your name and you don't need an account.

What stays on your device

Your practice progress, your display choice and your language choice are saved in your own browser (local storage). They're never sent to us. Clearing your browser data erases them.

Visit statistics

We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count visits and pages viewed. It uses no cookies, doesn't identify you and doesn't follow you to other sites.

Videos

The videos are hosted on YouTube. Nothing loads from YouTube until you press Play. Once you do, YouTube (Google) collects information under its own privacy policy. We use YouTube's privacy-enhanced mode (youtube-nocookie.com).

Who processes your information

• Cloudflare, Inc. hosts the website and keeps the email lists in a database.
• Google LLC provides the Gmail account our emails are sent from.
• Google Drive: to prepare a mailing, we export the list to a file on our Google Drive and delete it after sending.

These providers act on our behalf and may only use the information to provide their service to us. We never sell, rent or share your information with anyone else.

Information kept outside Québec

Our providers keep information on servers that may be outside Québec and outside Canada, including in the United States. Before collecting anything, we assessed the risks and the protections in place (encryption, limited access, provider commitments). Information held in another country may be accessible to that country's authorities under its laws.

How long we keep it

• Quiz list: as long as you're subscribed.
• Lessons list: until we send the email announcing lessons. We then delete it within 30 days, unless you're also on the quiz list.
• After you unsubscribe: we keep only your address, the list, your language and the dates you signed up and unsubscribed, so we never email you again by mistake. We keep them as long as the list exists and delete them with it.
• Exported files: deleted right after each mailing.

Your choices and rights

At any time, you can:

• unsubscribe at overheardinquebec.com/unsubscribe, or by replying "unsubscribe" to any email;
• ask what information we hold about you and get a copy;
• ask us to correct it;
• withdraw your consent;
• ask us to delete it.

Write to [email protected]. We reply within 30 days. We may ask you to confirm the request from the email address concerned.

If you're not satisfied with our answer, you can complain to the Commission d'accès à l'information du Québec (cai.gouv.qc.ca) or, if you live outside Québec, to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada (priv.gc.ca).

Security

Our hosting provider encrypts the information in transit and at rest. Only the person in charge can access the lists. The accounts used to manage the lists are protected by two-step verification. If an incident creates a risk of serious harm, we notify the Commission d'accès à l'information and the people concerned, as the law requires.

Children

Our email lists are for people 14 and over. If you're under 14, ask a parent or guardian to sign up for you.

Changes

We update this page and its date whenever anything changes. If we want to use your email for a new purpose, we'll ask you first.
